sea kayaking in the broughton archipelago

Sea kayaking at Farewell Harbour Lodge offers guests an opportunity to explore the crystalline waters of Northern Vancouver Island and to experience the wildlife, beauty and serenity of the famed 30,000 acre Broughton Archipelago Marine Park.

Returning to the rustic elegance of Farewell Harbour Lodge after each outing, you’ll experience excellent food, premium BC wines, comfortable beds, private ensuite bathrooms and passionate, experienced and engaging staff. Our lodge is perched at the ocean’s edge on Berry Island on 30 protected acres of private forest in the Broughton Archipelago. We feature an enchanting combination of floating and land-based accommodation seamlessly blended together with an easy-to-access network of ramps and walkways.

We offer 2 hour, half day and full day sea kayaking excursions. Our 2 hour and half day excursions take place in the protected waters around the lodge where we might poke into Blackfish Sound to watch passing Orcas or Humpbacks. Our full day sea kayaking excursions afford an opportunity to explore further afield in the Broughton Archipelago.

"I spent the first 15 years of my professional guiding career sea kayaking almost every inch of the BC coast as well as in Alaska and Baja and I can say without any doubt that the paddling in the Broughton Archipelago is some of the most beautiful and inspiring sea kayaking you will ever do!"
Tim Mcgrady, General manager, Farewell harbour lodge

Our shorter excursions depart daily from Farewell Harbour Lodge while on our full day excursions, weather depending, we have the opportunity to shuttle one way using our kayak transport vessel offering more paddling time. Given our proximity to Blackfish Sound, it can be an exhilarating, once-in-a-lifetime experience viewing marine mammals such as orca, humpbacks, dolphins, porpoises and sea lions from the seat of your kayak. (As a member of NIMMSA, the North Island Marine Mammal Stewardship Association, Farewell Harbour Lodge is committed to responsible wildlife viewing practices and abides by the marine mammal viewing regulations and guidelines.)

We use stable, tandem (2 person) sea kayaks chosen for comfort and stability. No prior experience is necessary. We travel in small groups with a maximum of 10 participants plus 2 guides. Sea kayaking is a fantastic activity to do as a family.
